Intro to Collage from a Photograph-Cardinal - Snow day make up class Day2

Hi! Welcome to the class! I promise, you are going to have a great time, even if you’ve never made a quilt before!

And don’t forget to bring your laugh! This will be a fun, interactive class. I am looking forward to meeting you! Please call the shop if you have any questions at all!

Supply List for Day 1, Jan 3, 2025:

Fabric (I prefer batiks, they fray less and the variations in color make for a more realistic collage), but please raid your stash first. If you see something you like, by all means, bring it to class, and we can make it work. I will also have some scrap fabric available to pick and choose from. If you have trouble, please contact the shop and we can talk through it.

The collage sample was made with fabrics found at the shop. You will need 4-5 reds of differing values (light to dark), dark orange, black, brown, 3 pinks, 2 greens. 1/8 yard of each will be more than enough. (Try not to fret about the fabrics, have fun picking them out, and try to raid your stash as much as possible. )

1.5 yards Steam a Seam 2
Fabric markers or water color markers (only if you have them, I will bring mine for you to use)
Number 2 mechanical pencil
Fine tip Black Sharpie Marker
Small Serrated Scissors (5inch)-Tim Holz or Karen Buckly scissors work best
Large pair of cheap scissors-these will get sticky and you will be cutting paper with them
1 yd of interfacing (not fusible, nonwoven sew in) or Pattern Ease
30x30 piece of matboard for transporting quilt
Alcohol pads (I will provide these)

I will provide the pattern and photo

Day 2- Jan 30, 2025-today we will fuse the collage to the background fabric and quilt/thread paint our cardinal!

Bring completed collage
30x30 piece of fabric to be your background, choose carefully! Your background sets off your collage!
35x35 piece of batting
35x35 piece of backing fabric-I would suggest a red fabric, as your thread work will show on the back.
A quilt “sandwich” made of 2 yellow, cream or white fat quarters, and an 18x22 inch piece of batting.
2 – 90/14 topstitch needles for sewing machine (I will supply these)
Sewing machine in good working order that can lower feed dogs
Spring action free motion foot-please try your foot before class to make sure that it fits your machine and to get familiar with attaching it.
Glide polyester embroidery thread in red and and another color to match your background. I will bring pink, black, orange and greens for you to use.
6 empty bobbins
20x20 piece of misty fuse (I will supply this for you)
